Old Washing place (Bicorp)

Bicorp

Old Washing place (Bicorp)

This washhouse was built alfresco and just covered by a roof and fed by a stream of water from the “Fuente de la Pintá”. It was in very bad condition due to the heavy floods in 1982, so it had to be rebuilt.
These laundries formerly functioned as an element of social cohesion, since it was the meeting place for the women, where while they washed their clothes, they discussed any event that occurred at the village. This tradition has survived to this day, as laundries are places where young people gather to spend some time together and tell their stories. It is commonly called “Lavadero Viejo” (Old laundry/washhouse) by Bicorp’s residents. This laundry is still used by some residents nowadays.
From yesteryear to the present day, the residents of Bicorp have come to the “Fuente de la Pintá” and the “Fuente de la Rambla”, near the laundry, to collect water for domestic use.
